Bainbridge Sat Aug 16 - Postponed [edited]

Update (8/12/14):

Game on 8/16/14 is postponed due to low turnout. We'll tentatively plan for a make-up game in October. Let me know soon what Saturdays DO NOT work for you in October. We can't please everyone but I'll choose a date (with group input) and try to reserve the rink.

--------------------------

So it seems like the plan for the East/West game at Bainbridge on Sat Aug 16 isn't getting the turnout that I had anticipated.

Currently the rosters are as below:

West:

  • Dean -- goalie
  • Alan Ho
  • Chris Koh
  • Cam Green
  • Tanner
  • Sam B
  • Jared
  • Grant

East:

  • Sharif -- goalie
  • Erik
  • Katherine
  • James Gannon
  • Vince
  • Evan

An idea tossed around was to postpone the game until October when more people can likely attend. This got a huge YES vote from those that can't make the Aug date and some that can. Some of the committed players for Aug have stated that they are still in even with the current turnout but would prefer an October date.

If West loans a player to the East we can have 5 on 5 with 1 sub (and 1 goalie per side).  Less than ideal but can still work.  I reserved the rink for 4 hours but we don't have to play for that long... Plus we have the Skills Competition (hardest shot, accuracy shooting) which won't require as much running around.

If we cancel the August date, I lose the reservation fee. So I propose that we play a game this weekend out at Bainbridge AND then have a bigger game of the same nature in October or November (after the Portland tourney to avoid conflicts) when more people can attend.  Note: weather in Oct or Nov may not be great, so it's a gamble to postpone it altogether.

On that note:

Game time: 1pm at Battle Point Park (11299 Arrow Point Dr NE, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110)

The ferries have had some troubles lately with one ferry being down and putting strains on other routes.  This past weekend it looked like ferries were consistently behind schedule by about 1 hour AND having long lines.  This makes carpooling make even more sense.

Ferries leaving Seattle: 10:35am and 11:25am, 12:20pm. (Assuming everything runs on schedule)

The ferry ride takes about 35mins.

I'd suggest taking the 11:25am ferry to avoid huge delays. Later times will have more traffic. You should try to be at the loading terminal and have your ticket purchased at least 45 mins before scheduled departure time -- meaning 10:40am.  Check the WSDOT ferry site for update on delays. Once on the ferry, meet inside near the concession stands.

Directions from Ferry Terminal in Bainbridge to Battle Point Park:

Get off the ferry and follow the flow of traffic straight on Rt 305. Drive 3 miles and turn L on Koura Road.  Drive about a mile on Koura Road (to it's very end).  Take a Left onto Miller Rd NE and a relatively quick right onto NE Arrow Point Drive.  Check out the google map for more detail.

Park at the first park entrance you see. If that lot is full, drive around the park and enter the other lot on Battle Point Drive (there is a tiny parking lot on Frey road, but it's far far from the rink).

Ferries returning to Seattle: 5:30pm, 6:30pm, 7:10pm, 8:10pm, 8:55pm, 9:45pm, 10:30pm

We have multiple options for returning depending on who wants to hangout afterwards and for how long. (Koh: any word on the name of that bar/restaurant you promised?)

If the ferries are super busy and backed up, we can also drive down through Tacoma and up around to Bainbridge. It's a much longer drive (~1h45min) BUT could be faster than if the ferries are super busy.  Depending on which route you choose to take, the directions will obviously be different. A quick Google Maps search will get you directions.

So for those attending, please post on here if you want to arrange carpools so we can figure it out.  I'm down for carpooling and am coming from the Wallingford area.

And... discuss.

The majority of people want to delay until October when we''ll hopefully have a better turnout. We'll just play at Salmon Bay on Saturday.

Please let me know soon what weekends in October DO NOT work for you so that I can reserve the rink in advance. Maybe the state park people will be nice and let me transfer the reservation fee to an October date. (I won't hold my breath though...)

Thanks.

Thanks for spearheading Dean!

I'm with VP... given the low turnout, hassles in getting there and lack of long-time, regular SSHers being able to go, makes sense to reschedule E vs W for October and play this Saturday in Ballard. It will lead to a much bigger/better game at Bainbridge in October.

Dean, thanks for leading the charge. Summer is always the low season for street hockey. I say postpone to October when hockey is back on people's mind.
