I overheard someone talking about needing a lot of nylon rope for a 'boards' project. FYI, here's what I've already researched:

Single (or solid) braided nylon - cheaper, and easily slides against itself, or hooks, etc. - this is probably what you want to buy.

Double-braided nylon - more expensive, looks like a 'typical' corded rope, great for sustaining shock loads - I don't think we need this.

Pricing if you buy a spool/reel of 1/4" (approx. cost/ft, not including tax):

Home Depot, 800-ft: 0.13

Tacoma Screw, 1000-ft: 0.18

Grainger, 1000-ft: 0.14

Pacific Industrial (tax included), 500-ft: 0.103

ULINE (no tax, shipping figured in), 500-ft: 0.096

I deal with ULINE, and shipping from CA is only about 3 days. I could order it if someone is interested.

Incidentally, I've already purchased 4-ft.x100-ft. of that bright orange barrier fencing - it's thicker and tougher than the stuff we have been using. I haven't cut it lengthwise yet (I'm sitting on it), as I will be performing a small-scaled test on what I think will work. I basically don't want to have bought 1000-ft. of nylon rope if my idea doesn't work, and be stuck with fencing as well. If my test works, then I'll approach you guys with some $ figures, and give details as to my idea. Also, the progress is slow as I do most of this work at my place of employment, and lately I need to get out of there asap.

So there you have it.

You'll have to trust me in you do not want my CONSTRUCTION help...but I can't make the building party since I work until 12:00pm, and typically don't get home until 1:00pm.

Hope it goes well, I am excited to see what you guys come up with.

no problem bubbles.

for any and all: i have all the materials on hand and after a strategy session with adam (and a couple of cigar malts) we agreed to meet around 11 AM on saturday to make a go at the new boards system.

if anyone else wants to help with set-up, just come early to greenwood elementary.

peace-out

Sorry guys, out of town till end of week so can't join ya.

I would go with the same fencing material you brought last Sunday. It was sturdy enough to get a good off the board bounce pass. I would go with a lower fence if possible to allow easy hopping over without getting tangled up. It would really rock if you could find a way to make the corners rounded with extra fence length... I agree with investing in metal cabling to make a tight no sag fit.

Hey, I have a new great idea for boards: just here me out, first we.................j/k, go Tsunami bitches!

benny, let's go with your idea as:

1) it seems to cost less than mine
2) it seems like it may well work - the critical points being, if I understand your design, that the cable and length of the fencing are the same; or else you'll either have a sagging top line, a loose 'fence', or lift on the bottom line, depending on what's happening
3) I haven't spent too much, nor am I asking for anything
and
4) I'm a ways out until completion

I'm quite happy to pause my work to see what you come up with. Let's shoot for Saturday!

i sure wish we were working on this *together* instead of separately. i was under the impression that everything was a "go" to move forward with the black silt-fencing. i also thought that we decided that the 4' fence was too tall and were opting for the 3' material.

i've done a bunch of leg work and *thankfully* i haven't purchased anything yet if you are out there spending money already-- i'm sure most people, me included, don't want to chip in on two fencing systems. so i will step back and let you work things out with vinny.

here's what i had come up with on my side (i was hoping to maybe get it together for this saturday, but i'm going to table that idea now):

[3} sections of 3' X 100' silt fencing with stakes every 9' @ $35.00/each

[4] ratchet tie-downs @ $15.00/ea

misc. hardware: eyebolts, etc. not yet priced

plastic coated galvanized steel cable: $0.24/ft, approx. [120' (X) 4] (X) .24 = $115.00 OR

galvanized steel cable: $0.13/ft, [120' (X) 4] (X) .13 = $62.40

100' of 1/4" marine rope is $8.00 but the more i looked into it and thought about the long term boards solution i really think it is worth investing in the steel cable. if the cable is run through, top and bottom, the length of the fence and then the tie-downs go around the fence and back to the cable you could ratchet them down extremely tightly without the sag and wear-and-tear of rope.

it may also be worth looking into the price of the silt fencing that has the metal fencing behind it (like i brought on saturday) instead of the one with the stakes. the cable could be "woven" throught the metal fencing on the back and ratcheted down super tightly-- this system would certainly be more rigid overall and probably better for playing the ball off the boards and more tear resistant.
