We came, we played hard, and we had a great fucking time doing it. First game was vs. an all-star team from New Jersey. They mercy'd us 8 to 0 and had us thinking "what the fuck just happened"(chuck quote) every time we came off the floor. New Jersey ended up winning the tournament allowing only 3 goals in all of their games.

Second game was against a tall group of guys from Calgary. We were in the game the whole time but came up short losing 1 to 0. After the game we went outside and drank beers in the warm weather with the Stratosphere tower looking down on us. We knew we played a great game, so we celebrated our effort and had a night to remember. I will spare the details for now but anybody on the Tsunami will tell you Friday night was a night to remember.

Saturday afternoon came and we were up against the host team, So Cal Chiefs. Geoff Weorbicki netted our first goal of the tournament with a quick slap shot from the side. Saying it was a snipe would be an understatement, it was one of the best goals of the tourney. The game went on and the Chiefs put one in tieing the game at 1 a piece. Our lead was gone but we kept running as hard as our hangovers would let us. Than a few minutes later the Chiefs struck again on the power play and took a lead 2 - 1. That turned out to be the last goal of the game and put the Tsunami into the C division (seeded # 3 out of 6 teams) heading into the playoffs.

Saturday night 9:40pm was the next game time. The So Cal Express were our opponents I believe. It was the quarterfinals and about midway through the game we found ourselves down 1 to 0. We kept going and peppering the goalie until finally I found the back of the net about midway through the second half tieing the game 1 - 1. Following this we took some penalties and were forced to kill off a 5 on 3 through the remainder of the 2nd half AND start of overtime. We did some amazing penalty killing and I don't think we even let a shot on goal(could be wrong). Than about midway through the overtime Corey S. takes the ball out of the left corner, stick handles past one guy, than another. He goes to his backhand and is hooked, he keeps possession and instead of shooting, passes the ball over to the left. Chuck was right on the door step and he hammered the ball home giving the TSUNAMI their first victory in tournament history! We all roared off the bench and congratulated each other, it was a great feeling. The next game was Sunday afternoon. Another night of drinking started in the ghetto parking lot. We knew it was sketchy place to drink but didn't care because we had just played an incredible game. Anyways, the next opponents were the Oakland Seals. The game started off at a fast pace, with scoring opportunities between both teams. I believe I had about 5 opportunities myself but I couldn't find the back of the fucking net, which turned out to be the storyline of the game. Our goalie Dan played a great game, but we couldn't muster enough offense and lost 1 to nothing. It was a bad feeling knowing we could have went to the finals and probably taken the championship. But we held our heads high and congratulated each other on a GREAT tournament. Ok i'm gonna add some pictures and than go to bed, hah, peace bitches!

A belated post on Vegas from me. It was a blast and an education. MVP in my eyes was Tyler H. He certainly kept those defensive talents while hidden when he played with us in the 'old days'. Looking forward to the Vancouver tourney. Training has begun (need to get my mojo back and bag some more garbage goals)...

Party after Canuck/Yank game at my house as per usual. The infamous Irishman (linehan) is expecting to be in town and is likely to show off his unorthodox hockey techniques.

Marshy, great summary of the weekend's events.
You're a poet and you don't even know it, but your feet show it...

Adam. Beautiful post. From the heart. I love it.

Gentlemen (loosely speaking):

It was my great honor to be a member of the Seattle Tsunami, Version 1.0. What a weekend; one for the ages. We fought, we learned, we won, we lost, we drank, we had our asses handed to us buy some boys from Jersey. .

I was glad to be along for the trip. I didn't know many of you coming into the tourney, and felt like the interloper. But, I had a frickin' blast playing and partying w/ you boys. A weekend I'll never forget. And man, what sweet unis we had.

I don't know what will happen w/ next year's tourney, I'm sure the demand to play will be high. Regardless, my services are always available for the Tsunami from Seattle.

Let me echo the thanks to all those that really made this tourney come together: Saliba, Vinny, Schneuer, Werbicki, Bubbles, and the whole lot of you.

Hope to see all of you soon. And if I can make it up for the 2nd annual Can-Am game, you Canucks better watch out. We're gonna light you up this year....

All the best.

My Brothers! Warriors! Friends!

What can I say? I had the MOST amazing time at the tourney in Vegas! I am proud to have been on such a hard-fighting team, and honored to be one of Tsunami’s players.

I started playing pickup with you guys a few months ago after I had learned that Kevin, my girlfriend Tasha’s boss, played on the weekends. Even then it took me about six weeks to get the wherewithal to see what it was all about. I was a little intimidated – are these guys crazy good? Are they extremely serious about their games? Are they meat-headed knuckle-draggers? I got the answers soon enough: some of them, not too much, and NO. Sure, it was damn fun to pick up a stick after 17 years since the last time I played pickup in high school, but it was the guys I met afterwards at St. Andrew’s that made the difference. Everyone really made me feel welcome. In particular, it was Andrei and Schneuer that made the biggest impact. It was a great fucking first time out, and I remember scoring the game-winner in the last game of the day: 10-feet out, top right corner, short-side on Dan-o. I don’t know how it got in.

(hang on, tears…)

Well, I was determined to improve my game, not only to make a better contribution to the group, but because I didn’t like getting rebuked by Cory and Benny for shitty passes. So, I built a mock goal, I looked up some puck control drills on the web, and I practiced after work for a few hours here and there. You can’t do anything unless you keep your head up! I also bought some lighter sticks and worked on different shaft lengths and taping methods so I could get the feel I liked. I love this game!

I digress…

Vegas was fucking UN-BELIEVABLE!!! I had such a blast. I have never played on a team sport like hockey, and it was such a goddamn adrenaline rush to be part of the scene: screaming for your teammates, jumping over the boards to get in the rink, going balls-to-the-wall for a 45-second shift, and doggedly coming back with slight tunnel vision and a mild case of dry heaves…it was awesome.

My absolute favorite part of the game was jumping in, usually after the ball was deep in the offensive end, sizing up where the ball was going and which opposing defenseman was going to get it – AND THEN DRAWING A BEAD ON MY MAN, PUTTING A TARGET ON HIS BACK, A GOING LIKE HELL TO SLAM HIM AND GET PUCK POSSESSION! That felt so good. I’m shivering just thinking about it.

The tone of the tourney was set for me before I even got to Vegas. Overheard behind me on the plane was this conversation:

Passenger #1: So what are you doing in Vegas?
Passenger #2: I’m playing in a ball hockey tournament.
#1: Sounds like fun!
#2: It should be. It’s my first time at it. I tried out for the team last year, but didn’t make it.

Fuck. What?

Well, what an introduction to the sport. A lot of these guys were wearing helmets (why are these guys wearing helmets?) and the play was physical. It was a huge rink for us, and we struggled adapting to the open spaces and adjusting to a different style of play. Line changes were new to most of us, as was penalty killing. High stick? That would be two minutes, sir. (It’s expensive in Vegas). I think we improved greatly during each game, and thankfully Dan helped keep us in it. As I quickly suspected, the guys with the most experience were going to adjust quickly and have the most offensive chances: the likes of whom were Cory, Geoff, Brad, and Chuck. Brilliant! Also offensively stunning were Ovington, Graeme, Benny, and Peto. The smart play of Payette, T. Henry, Doucette, and Schneuer was great to watch. And some incredibly hard play by Andrei, Saliba, Litwin, Koh, and I was impressive. (When you read your names here, don’t get too worked up by being “put” into one category and not another, I just wanted to mention everyone’s name here). I don’t remember too many particulars, I just know I ran like hell and hoped I helped out. My closest chance for a goal came during our second or third game, when I was down low screening the goalie and Chuck put a nice low shot on net from the point, straight through my legs, and off the fucking left post! Ringer! Oh, to have tipped it in!

Outside the tourney was a devastatingly good time! I enjoyed Vegas way more than I expected. What I remember comes in little bits and pieces. I’ve come to admire the lot you, some for your skills, others for their personalities, others for their character, and others still for their lack of character. I also found something out about myself while I was there: I’m good looking, interesting, and fun to talk to! $$$ Thanks to Kevin for getting this all together, to Geoff for getting us a sponsor and for the design work, to Schneuer for dealing with the jerseys, and to Vinnie for fronting the street hockey scene in Seattle to begin with!

If we do this again next year, sign me up – for tryouts!

nice marsh-- for the record the PP goal in the 2-1 loss was the tying goal not the game winner; i know cuz i took the penalty-- but at least that punk tasted some plexiglass!!

good work everyone-- a little more structure on O and i think we'll be even more competitive. who would've thought that we'd only score 3 goals in five games? some extra conditioning wouldn't hurt either-- d'oh!

all three teams that we played in pool were in the A division playoffs and aside from the 8-0 drubbing we were right in those other games.

thanks vinny from me and the scabs all over my legs. heheh.
