What type of shoes should I wear for street hockey...specifically shoes designed for tennis, basketball, etc.  What type of equipment that most people buy and wear?

What rules do you follow?  I like hockey but I am unfamiliar with the rules so I would like to get to know the rules.

Lainger, I only respond to people whose teams are on the way up, not on the way down after missing their chances to win the Cup.

One last thing - Dallas Stars fans need not participate.

Hey Justin, Not sure if you are still interested, but I'd like to second some of the comments below and add a few things:

  • Wear gloves - preferably hockey gloves, but some people use thinner padded gloves.
  • A cup is a great idea - you might get away without one for a year or two, but eventually it will pay off
  • White AND dark shirt.  NOT grey.  Grey is the worst, you never know what team the guy in grey is on.
  • Good attitude is key.  This is a great group of guys, but getting all butt hurt or angry can spoil things quickly.  Come out to have fun.
  • If you hustle and listen to direction, newbies tend to have a good time.  We tend to forgive mistakes, as long as you are willing to learn and try not to make the same mistake multiple times.
  • I find the ABS core blades work the best on the surface we play on.  You can get a one piece wood stick to start, but it will get chewed up pretty fast.
  • For some reason we can never seem to start on time.  12 becomes 1230, 1 becomes 130, sometimes 2.  I hate to perpetuate this, since it is a vicious circle, but if you show up at 1pm on the dot and no one is there, just hang out for a bit.  We'll show up.

Hope to see you out there sometime soon, and remember - come to have fun.

Also bring a stick.  Some people also wear gloves, mouth guard, protective eyewear, and jeezuz for the love of Christ wear a cup.

Well said Garside.  I add: Bring a good attitude and a willingness to learn, and you'll love it.
