CanAm Game - Timed Games?
I have talked to a number of guys over the last few weekends and enough players seem interested that I thought I should formally propose to the broader group the idea of having timed games for the CanAm game.
I believe timed games would accomplish the following:
1. Make for a more competitive game given the limited time to score
2. Allow for advanced tactics such as pulling the goalie or selecting which line to have in the final minutes of play
3. Eliminate the possibility of another "war of attrition" like last year. Kudos to the Canucks for outlasting us Yanks but I thought I was going to keel over after that one game lasted darn near two hours.
Just a thought and welcome comments as I have proposed to the Comish for his consideration.

Hybrid also. First to 5 goals. If that does not happen after 45 minutes then the team in the lead wins. I like the 4 on 4 idea for OT. That should expedite the winning goal.

1. First team to score 5 goals wins
2. If neither team has scored 5 goals before 45 minutes of running time has elapsed:
a. Leading team after 45 minutes wins
b. If it is a tie after 45 minutes, play stops for a 3-minute intermission. Play then continues in sudden-death overtime format
c. During sudden-death overtime, there will be a 3-minute intermission after each 45 minutes of running time
3. No shoot-outs, no time-outs, etc. We could optionally play 4-on-4 during OT, or enforce penalties, or enforce "icing" during OT to make it more likely to end quickly. But I think just keeping it NHL-style playoff OT is simplest. After all, this is for the most part just like the NHL playoffs, hee hee.
The worst would be to have some clown crying "foul" every time he drives the net like is seen all the time in pick-up basketball. So trying to enforce penalties or icing during any point of the game is probably not prudent.

what happens if the score is 3-3 after the allotted time?
do we just go sudden-death ot, or right to the shootout?

How about a hybrid this year- we still play first to 5 goals, but no longer than X minutes. Say 40 per game? Or 50?
It solves #3. Number #1 isn't really a concern for the US is it? And, regarding #2 you can pull your goalie if the game really drags on and approaches X.
Just a thought.
